The new contemporary art centre in Lodz is located in the former industrial zone which is converted according to the traditional urban design principles of a German urban designer Robert Krier. The contemporary art centre is being designed in the „special art zone“ where the converted and new buildings are increasingly being used for various cultural and public purposes and at the same time form both a new cultural island and the new image of the Polish city that so far was identified with the modern industrial period. The main tasks of the project include the creation of social and functional platform, reflecting upon its connections to the mental and urban features of the city. If the main actors in the contemporary city are not bodies but the manifold information flows that create various scenarios, the need to discuss the necessity of a flexible and hybridised space in the project rises. The project of such a „building“ could be described as the creation of a place where various meetings, conjunctions of information flows and meanings overlap. This „building“ is open to the city – to the centre of its new activity. The structure of the building reflects and interprets the architectural heritage of Lodz – 19th Century industrial objects and its characteristics such as large open spaces and tracery of metallic construction. Galleries typical to the art museums do not have a strictly defined function, but instead are utilized as platforms-squares that can be transformed and adjusted to the needed function. The traditional museum understood as a „storage room“ for art works is transformed with the introduction of additional dimensions – environment and communication. The proposed flexibility of the expositional spaces is created with the help of mobile walls and lowering barriers that are installed in the constructions of the ceiling.Status: competition, disqualified. 2008;Location: Lodz, Poland;Program: Contemporary Art Centre in the „Special Art Zone“;Space: 29 400 m²Architect: Vytautas Biekša, Marius Kanevičius, Rokas Kilčiauskas, Jeržy StankevičConsultant: Andrius Skiezgelas (concept), Ernestas Lukoševičius (structural engeneering), Vilius Zeimys (visualization)
