The surface that is stretching along the relief of the axis of the Sports Palace, rises by Seimyniskiu street and, going down to the river, completes the unfinished urban quarter. The northern and the western part of the complex are characterised by strict perimeter and, together with the planned building in Rinktines street, form a triangular public city space up to the Gediminas castle and the confluence of the Neris and the Vilnia rivers. The tone of this area is set by the Sports Palace that is protected as an example of the 20th Century modernist architecture. The founding territory of Vilnius city is also exposed by the confluence and the complex of the castles. The square is designed for the pedestrians and mass events. Its shape reminds that of the other principle squares of the city – the Cathedral Square, the City Hall Square, and the Square of the Opera and Ballet Theatre. It contains entrances to all the buildings of the architectural complex. The volume of the complex defined by strict shapes gradually dissolves moving towards south-east and turns into various spaces of small squares and yards.Status: competition, 2008Location: Vilnius, Lithuania;Program: conversion of the territory of the Zalgiris stadium and the Sport Palace including a covered football stadium (10 000 seats), a complex of offices and commercial premises, blocks of flats, a hotel and a convention centre;Indicators: football stadium - 25 900 m², apartments - 102 000 m², commerce - 52 500 m², offices - 42 300 m², hotel - 16 500 m², convention centre (Sport Palace) - 16 700 m², underground parking - 120 000 m²Architects: Tadas Balčiūnas, Vytautas Biekša, Marius Kanevičius, Rokas Kilčiauskas
